This morning, we left Villafranca and had a lovely—but hilly—walk to Atapuerca.  This place was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2,000 because the earliest human remains ever discovered in Europe (over 900,000 years old) were here!  The newest digs show signs of the first human communities going back over 1,000,000 years.  Unfortunately, the site and visitors’ center are closed on Mondays, as is the guided tour!  Don and I walked around a bit in the afternoon and had trouble finding a place to eat tonight, some closed because it was Monday and another because it was expecting a group of 65.  Aiutaci, Sant. Antonio!
We’re staying at the Casa del peregrino, part of the Centro Turistico el Peregrino, across a small courtyard from the Albergue.  News Flash:  at around 5:00 p.m., a whole busload of teenagers arrived at our albergue/guest quarters—right outside our window!  Now we know who the “65” were who were filling the restaurant.

We ate at PapaSol’s Casa Rural (where I wish we had been able to stay!), enjoying a delicious dinner surrounded by many peregrinos!
